Completed in 1863, it was the first synagogue in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Established in 1841, it is recognized as the first congregation and the first synagogue built in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Gardens Shul is a protected national heritage site and is part of the South African Jewish Museum.
