Synagogue Historic Site
Nestled in the heart of France’s Loire Valley, the Synagogue of Tours stands as a magnificent testament to Jewish resilience, heritage, and architectural beauty. 🕍✨

Built in the late 19th century (1907) and designed by architect Victor Blavette, this historical gem blends Neo-Byzantine and Romanesque revival styles. Its striking facade—marked by intricate stonework, grand arched windows, and decorative motifs—reflects a period when the local Jewish community found a permanent, proud home in Tours. Its stained-glass windows are signed by Lux-Fournier, glass painter in Tours. Its first rabbi, who practiced until 1937, was Léon Sommer. Stylistic Influences: Blends late Art Nouveau flourishes with subtle Orientalist motifs.

Interior ceilings and walls: feature a distinctive wooden compartmentalized painted ceiling and a painted floral frieze designed to mimic mosaic work.

Following World War II, the women's gallery was extended, and new stained-glass windows were installed by artist Pierre Lardin.

The interior houses an official memorial plaque honoring 34 Righteous Among the Nations from the Indre-et-Loire region who risked their lives to rescue Jewish families during WWII.

Beyond its stunning design, the synagogue carries a deeply moving history. Having survived the hardships of the 20th century, it remains an active center of Jewish life today, bridging centuries of memory, culture, and community in central France.
