Historic Site Museum Synagogue
Nestled in the heart of Targu Mures, the Sinagoga Status Quo Ante stands as a testament to the rich Jewish heritage that once thrived in this vibrant city. Completed in 1899, it served as a spiritual haven for a community that peaked at over 5,000 members during the early 1940s (almost 14% of the city’s population).
This architectural gem reflects Viennese synagogue design and houses a small museum showcasing fascinating historical artifacts and photographs.
The Status Quo Ante Synagogue (the Great Temple) was, for almost half a century, the house of worship of Targu Mures' thriving Jewish community.
Designed by Austrian, Jewish architect Jakob Gartner, the temple features an eclectic mix of architectural styles and influences including Moorish, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque. The most easily recognizable features, of the temple’s exterior, are the two onion-shaped domes and the main octagonal tower, featuring a rosette window on each side.
A spectacular rosette window, topped by a large Hebrew inscription, dominates the three-arched porch which serves as the main entrance. The interior blends, in harmony, different interior design styles: Corinthian columns, ornate balustrades, and Moorish-influenced floral patterns painted in reds, greens, blues, and whites. The windows are a stylization of the Star of David, the 6-pointed star. The bimah - centrally located in the main hall – is surrounded by railings and features candelabras on each of its corners. The ark is framed by columns, ornately decorated, and topped with a rosette and other features that remind baroque influences.
The synagogue seats 552 worshipers, 314 at the main level and 238 on the second-level (ladies’ balcony.)

The Great Synagogue is open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 12:30 pm. The arrival time and size of the group should be announced at least one day in advance. Interested parties can register their intention to visit by calling the following numbers: 0040 74500847 or 0040 265261810.
