Great Synagogue of Marseille or in French, La Grande Synagogue de Marseille, is the city of Marseille's oldest place of Hebrew worship. The congregation worships in the Sephardi rite. Opened in 1864, this Roman-Byzantine style synagogue was designed by architect Nathan Salomon and is considered as one of the finest religious constructions of the Second Empire. The building was listed as a historic monument in 2007. In 2015, according to an American study, there were 70,000 Jews in Marseille, making it the third largest community in Europe after Paris and London. Relations between Jews and Muslims are harmonious in Marseille, and the number of anti-Semitic acts has been lower than in other French cities since the upsurge in such acts in 2000. Visit from Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 1 pm. Guided tour of 25 mn, or conference visit of 1h30.
