Historical Overview
Historical Overview
Paris , Ontario

The capital of France, Paris, is the center of French Jewish activities. Two-thirds of the approximately 500,000 French Jews live in and around Paris. Paris offers a wealth of Jewish heritage. Jews have lived there since the year 582: a synagogue was founded in Paris dating to the year 582. A city renowned for its rich history and cultural diversity, Paris has been significantly shaped by its Jewish community. Dating back to the Middle Ages, Jews have been an integral part of the city’s social, artistic, and economic fabric. Despite periods of expulsion and persecution, Parisian Jews have returned time and time again, rebuilding time and time again. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Jewish community had significantly ensconced itself as a financial force, aiding the burgeoning economy. Jews also participated in more scholastic pursuits shaping cultural thought. From the early merchants to influential scholars, Jewish contributions have left a lasting legacy in the heart of Paris. This vibrant community thrives across various domains such as culture, education, business, and politics. The strong sense of identity and community manifests in a plethora of synagogues, schools, and cultural institutions that serve as the bedrock of Jewish life in the city.
