Synagogue
Built in the late 13th century, the Old New Synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in Europe. It has been the main synagogue of the Prague Jewish community for centuries and is an exemplary piece of early Gothic architecture. The synagogue continues to serve as a place of worship and a symbol of the enduring Jewish presence in the city.
The Old New Synagogue has a unique layer of mysticism and lore. For example, the stones used for the foundation are said to have been brought by angels from the temple in Jerusalem after its destruction. Legend says the stones will be brought back to Jerusalem when the temple is rebuilt. Additionally, Golem, a mystical creation said to defend Prague’s Jews, is said to be in turn within the synagogue.
Inside, twelve windows represent the 12 Tribes of Israel, and brass chandeliers illuminate the walls from vaulted ceilings. In the late 19th Century, the great philosopher Franz Kafka, himself, had his bar mitzvah right inside these holy walls.
The Old New Synagogue is steeped in legend and mysticism and is a unique sight definitely worth visiting.
