Housed in one of Paris’ most palatial mansions in the historic Marais quarter. The museum traces the historical evolution of Jewish communities from the Middle Ages to the 20th century through their cultural and artistic heritage. Although the focus is on the Jews in France, Jewish communities in Europe and North Africa are also represented. Here one will see religious items, textiles, manuscripts, and documents depicting Jewish history., including the archives of the Dreyfus affair. Some of the artists represented include Chagall, Modiglianai, Soutine, Kikoine, and other Jewish painters.
A half-century in the making, the Jewish Museum has moved from its location high above Montmaartre to the wonderful Hotel de Saint-Aignan, 17 rue du Temple, near the Pompidou Center.
