Historic Jewish Quarter of Porto
Historical LocationPorto had a vibrant Jewish community centuries before Portugal's founding in 1143. you can explore the preserved streets and historic sites that mark the different areas where Jewish people once lived and worked Porto's former Jewish quarters can be found by following streets with historic Jewish names, like Rua Monte Judeus, and by visiting sites such as Escadas da Vitória (Escadas da Esnoga), where the main synagogue once stood. Street names including Rua Nova, Rua da Estrela, and Rua Espinosa, are remnants of the medieval Jewish community The city's first synagogue was on or near the site of the present-day Igreja dos Grilos (Church of the Crickets).
