Porto had a vibrant Jewish community centuries before Portugal's founding in 1143. you can explore the preserved streets and historic sites that mark the different areas where Jewish people once lived and worked Porto's former Jewish quarters can be found by following streets with historic Jewish names, like Rua Monte Judeus, and by visiting sites such as Escadas da Vitória (Escadas da Esnoga), where the main synagogue once stood. Street names including Rua Nova, Rua da Estrela, and Rua Espinosa, are remnants of the medieval Jewish community
The city's first synagogue was on or near the site of the present-day Igreja dos Grilos (Church of the Crickets).

Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish congregation and synagogue. The synagogue was completed in 1938 in the Art Deco style, and is the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula. Currently the Jewish community in Porto has 150 active members from 19 different nationalities and a kosher food store. There are plans to open a school, and a kosher restaurant. In 2012, the synagogue was opened to Jews to worship there.
