Museum
The Solomon Museum is the only dedicated Jewish Jewish history museum in Albania. It is located in Berat's historic Jewish quarter. The Solomon Museum was created in 2018 by Professor Simon Vrusho, an enthusiast who collected hundreds of documents, photographs and artefacts retracing 2,000 years of Jewish history in Albania. The Solomon Museum also tells the story of how Albanians of Muslim and Christian faiths saved Jews during the Holocaust. After Vrusho’s death, the French-Albanian businessman Gozmend Toska financed its reopening and expansion to another part of the city. The museum's current director is Angjelina Vrusho, Simon Vrusho's wife.
Albania is the only country in Europe where the Jewish population grew during World War II.
Two new Jewish museums dedicated to the history and culture of the Jewish community in Albania will be opening in 2025: one in Tirana with a particular focus on the Holocaust and the unique story of Albanians sheltering Jews during World War II; and another in Viora.
The old town of Berat is a World Heritage Site, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows”.
